Turtle Island

For some Indigenous groups, Turtle Island is the name which refers to the continent of North America. The name originates with the Indigenous oral history of the world being carried on the back of a turtle.

It turns out that these snapping turtles follow a yearly migration path to their winter underground mud-holes. They return each year to the exact same spot. This turtle was photographed as she emerged from the muddy ground by a dried up lake.
