Reading
The best way to improve reading ability is through lots of practice. Children need to read and be read to regularly.
Reading can be broken down into several key skills. Practicing these skills will increase reading proficiency.
Fluency (the ability to read words accurately, smoothly and with expression)
Comprehension (the ability to understand what has been read)
Reading can be broken down into several key skills. Practicing these skills will increase reading proficiency.
Fluency (the ability to read words accurately, smoothly and with expression)
- decoding: students can learn strategies to figure out words which they find tricky
- phonics: words can be broken down into phonemes, different sounds and spelling patterns (ex. a, ee, ch, oi)
- sight words: high frequency words and words which can't be sounded out and have to be learned by sight (ex. the, their, have)
- word families: words that share the same ending sound and spelling pattern (ex. cat, hat, rat, chat)
Comprehension (the ability to understand what has been read)
