Reading Strategies

The Beanie Baby Strategies link a character to a particular reading strategy in order to help children remember them when they are reading.

These strategies are not my original ideas. Many more resources can be found to support these strategies through a simple internet search.

Decoding Strategies

Lips the Fish says, "Get your lips ready to make the beginning sound."

Stretchy Snake says, "Stretch the sounds out." (sounding out)

Chunky Monkey says, "Break the word down into smaller chunks. Look for parts you know."

Flippy Dolphin says, "Some letters make more than one sound. Try the other one."

Tryin' Lion says, "Don't give up. Keep on tryin'. Use another strategy.'"

Helpful Hippo says, "If you've tried the other strategies and you still aren't sure, ask for help."

Dot the Giraffe says, "Look at the punctuation and read with expression."

Comprehension Strategies

Jabber the Parrot says, "Think about the most important parts of what you read. Retell it in your own words."
