Addition Strategies
Count Up (Start with the greater number and count on. This strategy works best when smaller numbers are being added on like +1, +2, +3.)
|
|
Zero Facts (When you add zero to a number, the number doesn't change.)
Doubles (When you add a number to itself.)
Near Doubles (For questions that are almost doubles, think of the double and adjust. 6+7, think 6+6+1)
Partners That Make Ten (Two numbers that add together to make 10.)
|
|
Make Ten (To add 8+4, think 8+2+2 - Decompose one number to make a ten. Add on the rest.)

Subtraction Strategies
Count Back (Count back from the starting number.)
What's the Difference (When the numbers are close together, think of the hops between them on a number line.)
Think Addition (Think about the related addition facts, 9-3 = ?, How much do I add to 3 to make 9? 3+6 =9, so 9-6 =3)
Zero Facts (When you subtract zero from a number, the number doesn't change.)
Neighbours (When you subtract a number from it's neighbor, the answer is 1. (9-8=1)
Same Numbers (When you subtract a number from itself the answer is zero. You have taken everything away.)
